The Independent Difference

What Happens After Your Limits Run Out

Here is the scenario that sells umbrella coverage, and it is not hypothetical. You cause a multi-car accident. Several people are injured. Your auto policy pays its limit, which might be a few hundred thousand dollars, and then it stops. The remaining judgment does not stop. It follows your savings, your home equity and, in some cases, your future wages.

An umbrella policy picks up where the underlying policy ends, usually in millions rather than thousands, and it costs a fraction of what people assume because the claims that reach it are rare. It also covers some things your home and auto policies do not, including certain personal injury claims like libel and slander.

You do not need to be wealthy for this to matter. If you own a home, carpool, host people, have a teenage driver or own a dog, you have the exposure. We write umbrella coverage across Colorado and Arizona.

  • Coverage nationwide
  • Sits above home and auto
  • Often surprisingly inexpensive

What Is In a Policy

What an Umbrella Policy Reaches

Umbrella coverage is broad by design. These are the situations where it typically responds.

  • Auto Liability Above Your Limits

The most common trigger by far. A serious injury accident can exceed auto limits quickly once medical bills and lost earnings are counted.

  • Home and Premises Liability

Someone injured at your property. Pools, trampolines, icy steps and dogs are the recurring causes, and home liability limits are often lower than people realise.

  • Landlord Exposure

If you rent out a property or a portion of one, the liability follows you. Umbrella coverage can extend over a rental dwelling policy.

  • Personal Injury Claims

Libel, slander and defamation. Rare, but real, and increasingly plausible in an era where everyone publishes to social media.

  • Legal Defence Costs

Defence is usually paid in addition to the limit, which matters because legal fees mount whether or not you are ultimately found liable.

  • Recreational Vehicles

Boats, RVs and off-road vehicles can often be brought under the umbrella, provided the underlying policy carries the required limits.

Umbrella policies require you to carry set minimum limits on the underlying policies, so we check your auto and home coverage first. If you own a boat, RV or motorcycle, see recreational insurance. Coverage terms and payouts depend on your policy and the carrier.

Common Questions

Umbrella Insurance Questions We Hear a Lot

  • Less than most people guess. A million dollars of additional liability is often a modest annual figure on top of existing policies, because claims that reach an umbrella are uncommon. We will quote yours specifically.

  • No. A judgment can reach future wages, not just current assets. If you own a home, have a teenage driver, host gatherings or own a dog, the exposure is already there.

  • It sits above both, which is the point. It does not replace them. Carriers require minimum underlying limits on your home and auto policies before they will write it.

  • Your own injuries and your own property, which the underlying policies handle. Business activities generally need commercial coverage, and intentional acts are excluded everywhere.

  • Yes. An umbrella does not have to start on the same date as your home or auto renewal, though aligning them can simplify billing. We will handle the timing.

  • A common approach is to cover your net worth plus a margin for future earnings. Limits usually start at one million and step up from there, and the cost per additional million typically falls.
