The Independent Difference

Coverage Built Around What You Actually Do

A contractor, a restaurant and a consultancy have almost nothing in common from an underwriting point of view, which is why a one-size commercial package tends to leave someone exposed. The question is never just how much coverage, it is which carrier is comfortable with your class of business.

That is the advantage of being independent. We place business with carriers that specialise in different trades, including workers' compensation through Pinnacol and hard-to-place risks that a captive agent would simply decline. If your operation has changed since you last looked at the policy, that is usually where the gap is.

We write coverage nationwide, so whether you operate out of Falcon, Colorado Springs, Denver or Phoenix, and whether you have two employees or forty, we can work with it.

What Is In a Policy

What Your Commercial Coverage Can Include

Commercial insurance is assembled from separate parts. These are the four most businesses start with, plus the ones that get overlooked.

  • Liability Insurance

An accident on your premises can turn into a claim well beyond your assets, and defence costs apply even when you win. General liability responds to bodily injury and property damage you are found responsible for.

  • Commercial Auto Insurance

If vehicles are used for the business, a personal auto policy may not respond at all. Commercial auto covers the vehicles, the drivers and often hired or non-owned use.

  • Workers' Compensation Insurance

Required in Colorado once you have employees. It covers medical costs and lost wages for on-the-job injury and, in doing so, protects the business from being sued directly.

  • Property Insurance

The building if you own it, plus equipment, stock and fit-out. Severe weather and fire are the usual causes of loss, and both are well represented in Colorado.

  • Business Interruption

Helps replace income while you are closed after a covered loss. The coverage people most regret skipping, because rent and payroll do not pause.

  • Cyber and Crime

Increasingly relevant if you take card payments or hold customer records. Social-engineering fraud is now a more common loss than burglary for many small businesses.

Coverage terms and payouts depend on your policy and the carrier. Business vehicles need commercial auto rather than a personal auto policy, and commercial umbrella coverage sits above your liability limits. See the carriers we work with.

Common Questions

Business Insurance Questions We Hear a Lot

  • If you have employees, generally yes. Colorado requires it from the first employee, with narrow exceptions. Getting this wrong carries penalties, so it is worth confirming rather than assuming.

  • Possibly not. Their personal policy may exclude business use, and yours may not extend to a vehicle you do not own. Hired and non-owned auto coverage is the usual fix and is normally inexpensive.

  • It is the one-page proof of coverage a general contractor or landlord asks for before you can start. We issue them from the office, and for existing clients it is usually same day.

  • Rarely to any useful degree. Home policies typically cap business property low and exclude business liability entirely. A small in-home business endorsement or a standalone policy is usually the answer. See home insurance.

  • Often. Being independent means we are not limited to one company's appetite, and we place business through specialist markets for trades that standard carriers avoid. It is worth a conversation.

  • Annually, and any time the business changes materially. New vehicles, new employees, a new location or a new service line all shift your exposure, and policies do not update themselves.
