The Independent Difference

Decide Before the Vet Bill, Not During

Nobody buys pet insurance for the fun of it. They buy it because a friend got handed a five figure estimate for a torn ligament or a swallowed sock, and realised the decision about their animal was suddenly a decision about money.

The mechanics are different from your other policies. You usually pay the vet directly and get reimbursed afterwards, at a percentage you choose, above a deductible you choose. You keep your own veterinarian, which is the question people ask first. The catch worth understanding is pre-existing conditions, which are excluded across the market, and that is why timing matters more here than in any other line we write.

We write coverage nationwide, so wherever you and the animal are, we can help you compare what the plans actually reimburse rather than what the advert implies.

What Is In a Plan

What Pet Coverage Can Include

Plans vary more than in most lines, and the differences are in the detail rather than the headline.

  • Accidents

Broken bones, bite wounds, swallowed objects and the torn ligaments that active dogs are prone to. Accident-only plans stop here, which is the trap.

  • Illness

Infections, cancer, diabetes and chronic conditions. This is where the real cost sits over an animal's life, and where cheaper accident-only plans leave you.

  • Diagnostics

Imaging, bloodwork and lab fees. Often the largest line on an emergency invoice before any treatment has actually started.

  • Surgery and Hospitalisation

Emergency procedures and the overnight stays that follow. The scenario people picture when they finally decide to buy a plan.

  • Prescription Medication

Ongoing medication for chronic conditions. Worth checking, as some plans include it and others treat it as an add-on.

  • Wellness Add-Ons

Vaccinations, dental cleaning and routine checks. Usually optional, and closer to a payment plan than to insurance, so weigh it on that basis.

Pre-existing conditions are excluded by essentially every pet insurer, so enrolling while an animal is young and healthy is the single biggest factor in what you get out of a plan. Reimbursement levels, deductibles and annual caps vary by carrier, and we will show you the differences side by side.

Common Questions

Pet Insurance Questions We Hear a Lot

  • Yes. Pet insurance works by reimbursement rather than a network, so you can use any licensed vet, including emergency and specialist practices. That is a real difference from human health insurance.

  • Broadly, anything that showed signs before coverage started or during the waiting period, whether or not it had been formally diagnosed. This is why enrolling early matters so much in this line.

  • Almost always. Accident coverage often begins within days, illness coverage typically takes a couple of weeks, and orthopaedic conditions can wait longer. Nothing is covered from the moment you sign.

  • It can be, but honestly it is a closer call. Premiums rise with age and more conditions will already count as pre-existing. We will show you the numbers rather than talk you into it.

  • Only for liability if your dog injures someone, and some carriers restrict or exclude certain breeds. It does nothing for your animal's own medical care. See home insurance for that side.

  • You pay the vet at the time, submit the invoice, and the insurer reimburses its share once your deductible is met. Some carriers now pay quickly by direct deposit, which takes most of the sting out of it.
